Lake Biwa

Whispering lake
Golden topaz jewel of central Japan
From the peaks of Holy Hiezan I see
Your shape of Benten’s holy lute
My feet take me to your waters
On my morning jog
Lotus flowers in rich muddy paddies
Open white and pink eyes at first light
Then close then with a pop

Stinking lake
Brown green toilet bowl of central Japan
From your jammed highway girdle I see
Concrete leaching poison into you
Rusty pipes take your waters to me
To sieve and boil for morning tea
Putrescent green algae blooms in slimy depths
While locals fish out alien Emperor Bluefins
Then leave them rotting by your side
