Knowing Plants

White oak

Perfect width for climbing

Bark beautiful to see and smell

Burning

Birch tree

Labrador Tea

Little green and orange kayaks

Bitter in hot water

Dogberries

Poisonous red

Partridge berries

Sour beige tang

Pussy willows

In Lake Melville and roadside ditches

Reeds by the river

Undulating in summer winds

Pine trees

Clean green scent of spring

Snowy pit trap of winter

I knew them all

Since I’ve moved to cities

The only plants I know

Are names written in Latin on plastic cards

Thrust in the dirt of pots
