Train Beauty

Beauty beside me
On the rainy day train
I smelled you first
Store bought perfume and youth
Red stockings on skinny legs
Nose buried in newspaper
Chestnut cascade behind
Pastel lumberjack shirt
You tried to hide
The ear you scratched
But the paper gave you away
Lover or daughter
I would have been proud
To have you as either
At my awkward age
By the time we arrived
You were gone
I walked out with your graceless twin
Next to my graceless self
And we disappeared
Down our separate tunnels
