Yesterday's baby
Woke up saying "I'm scared"
Ate breakfast, brushed and dressed
In no time, without the usual whines
Put on his new uniform, his heavy rucksack
Kissed us old folks
Walked down the long street to school
Alone, for the first time in his life
Didn't look back or wander
(Crossed without looking
This old man saw
Following like a shadow)
Marched up to the waiting troop
Of uniformed kids big and small
And became
Today's big boy
I miss you, yesterday's baby
I love you, today's big boy
They grow up and away so fast, in the blink of an eye taking eternity with them.
